Save Braunton Library Campaign! What to read and where…
The Consultation is now underway which will affect the future of Braunton Library.
1. Consultation introduction
You can read the introduction to the Consultation here.
2. The proposals
The specific proposals are set out here. Click on each proposal for the details. The most significant as far as Braunton is concerned is proposal which you can read here.
3. How can we save our library?
The consultation closes on 17th July (although note that paper responses need to be in by 10th July) and it’s essential that as many people as possible respond. You can fill in the online questionnaire here. But this isn’t merely an exercise in voting for the library to stay open. The consultation is actively looking for suggestions as to how the community might become involved in the running of the library. They give examples of other libraries which have been saved and they provide good inspiration for thinking of ideas for Braunton. You can read those examples here. These range from Porlock Library which has harnessed volunteers and financial support from the Parish Council to Gamlingay Eco Hub which has provided another way of harnessing local community support and spirit.

New Braunton parking restrictions – you have until 16 May to object!
As you can see from the proposal below (and also here), Devon County Council are proposing to make significant changes to parking in particular areas of Braunton, in particular on specified lengths of Barton Lane, Burrows Park, Chaloners Road, Church Street, Exeter Road, Gubbins Lane, Lower Park Road, Palmers Close, Second Field Lane, South View, Station Close and Station Road. If this affects you or you have a view on it, you can see the proposed draft Order here. Also, the main page is here and the page to register any objection is here. You might also consider lobbying the County Councillor for Braunton Rural who is Caroline Chugg. Her details are here.

All the right notes, and in the right order: DUNCAN HONEYBOURNE and NDS play Grieg at the Landmark
North Devon’s resident symphony orchestra, the North Devon Sinfonia, is joined by one of the UK’s leading pianists in the famous Grieg Piano Concerto at the Landmark Theatre on Saturday 10th May.
Award-winning pianist, teacher and broadcaster Duncan Honeybourne is the soloist in the Grieg A minor concerto – a work which audiences of a certain age will remember being murdered by Eric Morcambe in the classic 1971 comedy sketch.
Mercifully – unlike Morcambe, who famously played “all the right notes; but not necessarily in the right order” – Duncan can be relied upon to give a sparkling performance of this much-loved concerto.
A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and Birmingham Conservatoire, Duncan tours extensively as a recitalist and can often be heard performing on Radio 3. He is also currently Tutor in Piano at Southampton University and gives regular masterclasses and lecture recitals.
In 1999, at the age of 22, Duncan was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. He has since built a reputation as a thought-provoking and entertaining speaker on his experience of life on the autistic spectrum.
Duncan’s performance will mark the climax of a thrilling concert by the North Devon Sinfonia at the Landmark. Other works in the programme include Mendelssohn’s overture The Hebrides, the Slavonic Dance No.8 by Dvorak and Stravinsky’s dramatic orchestral suite from his ballet The Firebird.
• North Devon Sinfonia performs at 8:00pm on Saturday, 10th May at the Landmark Theatre, Ilfracombe. All seats £12 (under-18s free) and are available from North Devon Theatres box office: 01271 32 42 42. www.northdevontheatres.org.uk

Was Tarka the Otter author Henry Williamson a belly boarder?
Having today visited Henry Williamson’s writing hut above Georgeham which is currently for sale with Webbers I was delighted to see an old belly board propped against the wall. Was he an early belly boarder in the area? Time for Pete Robinson of the Museum of British Surfing to investigate further perhaps? You can see the belly board on the third of the photographs here.
