Silver Cottage – Idyllic bed and breakfast cottage in Braunton, North Devon

20140531-084154-31314435.jpgIf you’re looking to stay in Braunton, then a big heads-up for Silver Cottage on Silver Street in Braunton. It’s a beautiful Grade II listed and family run country cottage in a stunning part of the village. Here is what they say about themselves on their website.

“We are a young husband and wife team, Sophie and Matthew and our two children, Esme and Albert.
Sophie grew up in this cottage and then moved to Exeter to study at the university. She moved to Bristol in 1997 where she met her husband to be on the dance floor of a local discotheque. She worked as a lettings agent in Clifton Village and has now returned to Braunton with her family and husband to run the family business started by her Mother.
We are delighted to be living in this idyllic location and are thrilled to bring up our children surrounded by this wonderful green and pleasant land.
We look forward to welcoming you and are excited to be able to offer hospitality to our B and B guests.”

Braunton’s very own Andrew Cotton rides huge wave in Portugal and tames Jeremy Paxman on Newsnight!

Braunton’s very own Andrew Cotton has gone global in the last few days after surfing a huge wave in Nazare in Portugal. You can see the clip below. As well as masses of press coverage, he was also interviewed by Jeremy Paxman on Newsnight which you can see here. Having been the person who towed Garrett McNamara into the world’s biggest wave in the past, it seems fitting that Andrew’s well-deserved time has now come.

ex33EX33 Magazine is run by Ant Parker and seems to be read by almost everyone in the area. It provides a great mixture of local information and businesses as well as introducing local people and what they’re up to. Support Ben Bradshaw as he walks the Braunton Parish boundary

ben2

Ben Bradshaw (left) is the new curate of the Braunton Mission Community and in July he will be doing a sponsored walk of the parish bounds of Braunton. These stretch out over 25 miles and include walking through fields and beaches. To the north it goes past Knowle, to the East as far as Fullabrook and Pippacott, to the South it stretches to the end of Braunton Burrows and to the West, past the village of Saunton. He is hoping to raise £1,000 by doing the walk to raise funds for St Brannock’s Church which has recently had to find funding to complete urgent roof repairs costing over £7000, at a time when the Church is already suffering serious financial difficulties.

On the walk he will not be taking any money, food or a tent with him. He will sleep under the stars during the night of his walk and will rely on kind-hearted strangers I meet on the way to provide any food donations. He says on his funmdraising page, “I decided on this unusual step to be in solidarity with, and also to experience first hand, the challenges that many people around the world face on a daily basis, not knowing where their next meal will come from or where they will sleep at night. I have visited Zimbabwe on three separate occasions and I do charity work with refugees, lepers and orphans in the African country who often live under such circumstances.”

To sponsor him visit his JustGiving page and for more information you can email him on brother_ben@btinternet.com.

Braunton’s connection with a great Everest mountaineer

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWith the sixtieth anniversary of the first summit of Mount Everest tomorrow (subject to whether or not Mallory and Irvine made it up there), I thought I’d mention Braunton’s connection with the world’s highest peak. Specifically, Dr Rob Casserley lived here until about four years ago. He has summited the peak a total of eight times and is the only Westerner to have summited twice in a single season in two different years. You can read more about him here and here. He also runs Trek 8848 with Pasang (Ang) Nuru Sherpa and Kevin Vann.
